Your essential guide to staying independent

pendant alarm is a small, lightweight device designed to make it easy to call for help in an emergency. Typically worn around the neck like a necklace or on a wrist strap. The alarm has one simple button that, when pressed, connects the user to the 24/7 Emergency Resolution Team.

Unlike mobile phones, pendant alarms are really easy to use. There are no complicated menus or tiny buttons, just a single button to press when you need help. It’s a great option for older adults who might have trouble with mobility or dexterity.

And because you wear it, there’s no need to worry about misplacing it or forgetting to take it with you - something that's all too easy to do with a mobile phone.

A pendant alarm typically consists of:

  • A central button – This is the main feature of the device. Pressing it sends an alert for help, either to a 24/7 monitoring centre or pre-set emergency contacts.
  • A water-resistant outer casing – Most pendant alarms are designed to be water-resistant or waterproof, so they can be safely worn in the shower or bath, where falls are more likely.
  • An integrated speaker and microphone (in some models) – This allows for two-way voice communication, so the user can speak directly with the Emergency Resolution Team through the device, without needing a phone.
  • An LED light or visual indicator – Many models include a small light that shows the alarm has been activated or that the battery is charging.
  • A rechargeable battery – Some alarms contains a built-in battery that typically lasts one to two months. In-home alarms have an even longer battery life of up to 6 years.
  • Wireless connectivity – Depending on the model, the device connects to mobile (cellular) networks using a SIM card.
  • Optional fall detection sensors – Some pendant alarms include internal sensors that can automatically detect a fall and raise an alert without the need to press the button.
  • Optional base unit – Some in-home alarm systems come with a separate base unit that stays plugged in and provides a constant connection to the Emergency Resolution Team.

Who are pendant alarms for?

Pendant alarms are ideal for elderly people, people living with medical conditions, or anyone who may feel vulnerable at home or while out and about. They're especially helpful for those who are at risk of falling, live alone, or want the peace of mind that help is always just a button press away. Whether it's used after a hospital stay, during recovery, or simply as a safety net for independent living, a pendant alarm provides confidence, security, and fast access to support in an emergency.

How do pendant alarms work?

Pendant alarms are simple and intrusive, providing a quick and reliable way to call for help at the press of a button.

Here's how Taking Care's pendant alarms work:

  1. Press the button on your pendant to send an alert.

Once you press it, a message is instantly sent to the base unit in your home, or connects you directly to our 24/7 Emergency Resolution Team.
  2. Our 24/7 Emergency Resolution Team jumps into action right away, reaching out to you to assess the situation.

  3. They’ll listen to your needs and figure out if you need assistance. Depending on your pendant, they can talk to you:

    - Directly through the speaker on your pendant, or
    - Through the base unit in your home.

  4. Based on the situation, the team decides the best course of action.

They might reach out to a family member, close friend, or even a trusted neighbour             to make sure you’re getting the support you need.

In emergencies, they’ll quickly contact emergency services. Whatever happens, the team will keep you updated so you’re never left feeling unsure or alone.

Do pendant alarms go directly to 999?

Most pendant alarms don’t call 999 directly. Instead, here’s how our pendant alarms work:

Trigger an alert

Pressing the pendant button activates an alert sent to our 24/7 Emergency Resolution Team.

Situation assessment

The trained team assesses the situation to decide the best course of action. They’ll decide if emergency services are required, or if other support is more appropriate.

False alarms

If the button is pressed accidentally or a fall is falsely detected the team checks in with you and resolves the issue without involving emergency responders.

Real emergencies

In genuine emergencies, the team acts quickly to contact 999 or other emergency services to ensure you get immediate help.

This system ensures you receive the right support, exactly when you need it.

Choosing the right pendant alarm

Picking the right pendant alarm is all about what works best for you or your loved one. Think about what really matters - like how long the battery lasts, the range, or if it includes automatic fall detection. Taking a few minutes to find out about these features can make it easier to find the perfect fit.

Fall detection

Pendant alarms with fall detection are designed to automatically detect falls when a user has fallen and send an alert, even without the press of a button. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals at risk of falls, including those prone to:

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Seizures
  • Fainting

GPS location tracking

For retirees who lead an active lifestyle and enjoy exploring, a pendant alarm with GPS tracking provides added peace of mind for both you and your loved ones. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through the park or running daily errands, GPS tracking gives you the confidence and the freedom to venture beyond the safety of home.

Water-resistant

Around 80% of falls happen in bathrooms so it's important that pendant alarms can be worn in the shower or bath.

Extended battery life

Personal alarms with long-lasting batteries are both dependable and low-maintenance. Battery life can vary significantly depending on the type of pendant, ranging from 1-2 months to up to 6 years. If you’re choosing a pendant alarm for a loved one, think about how often you’ll be able to help with battery replacements.

Communicate through the pendant

Some pendant alarms let you chat directly with the 24-hour monitoring Emergency Resolution Centres through the pendant itself. With an inbuilt microphone and speaker, you can press the button and get connected instantly. Whether you’re running errands, catching up with friends, or out in the garden, it keeps you safe wherever you are.

Comfort and style

When choosing a pendant alarm, it’s important to think about how it looks and feels. Would you or your relative prefer wearing it as a necklace, or would a wrist strap, like a watch, feel more comfortable? Think about what fits best with your daily routine and what you’d feel good wearing all the time.
