Choosing a GPS Dementia Tracker Alarm
Monitored dementia devices help keep vulnerable people safer, reducing the support they require from health and social services and from the emergency services.
The information on this page will help you find the right GPS dementia trackers or alarms for your loved one
A monitored dementia device, whether it’s a GPS pendant, a dementia tracking watch or a key fob, provides great peace-of-mind and confidence to partners and family members who worry about their loved one's wellbeing. Taking Care’s specialist Emergency Resolution Team will answer emergency calls from the dementia alarm device 24-hours a day, so support is always on hand if your loved one is in distress, wanders off or gets lost.
With GPS tracking, the Emergency Resolution Team can accurately identify the location coordinates of the device and arrange for help to quickly reach the person in need. Some devices can have safe zones configured that automatically alert friends or family if the device moves outside of pre-set locations.

How to choose a dementia tracking watch or alarm device
Devices for early-stage dementia
As dementia is a progressive disease, a person will usually start off with mild symptoms and remain independent. During this stage, people can often be easily confused and they may find it reassuring to be able to call for help from any location, day or night, using a wrist-worn dementia personal alarm watch or GPS alarm.
Having a dementia tracking watch or GPS pendant alarm can give those with early-stage dementia symptoms, and their loved ones, the confidence and peace of mind to live independently for as long as possible.
Devices for moderate cognitive decline
People living with dementia may be prone to wandering and can become confused and lost. A simple dementia alarm with GPS tracking built-in, such as the Out-and-About Classic GPS Alarm, may be more suitable if your loved one is likely to do this.
This GPS dementia tracker device is designed to be easy to use and has one big button to press to speak with the Emergency Resolution Team in an emergency.
Devices for later stages of dementia
Someone living with later stage dementia will show signs of more severe cognitive decline and require more support from carers. The Dementia Locate is a simple GPS tracker designed to be dementia-friendly. It does not have any buttons, lights, microphone or speaker so as not to confuse or alarm the person carrying it.
It's accurate GPS tracking reports its position approximately every 4 minutes so the Emergency Resolution Team can locate the wearer. Family members can also view the location of the device online using a secure website.
Frequently Asked Questions about GPS dementia trackers
Could my loved one take off their dementia alarm?
All of our dementia alarms and other personal alarm devices are designed to be comfortable and unobtrusive to wear, so they don’t get in the way of normal daily activities. For this reason, it’s very unlikely that the wearer will want to take off the device.
Depending on which of our dementia alarms you choose, they are usually worn around the neck like a pendant, on the wrist as a dementia tracking watch or can be attached to clothing, such as the belt. This minimises the chance that the person with dementia will take off the device, and because it’s worn whenever they’re awake, they won’t leave it behind if they go out for a walk.
How often do dementia alarms need to be charged?
All of our GPS dementia tracker devices have different battery capacities, so it’s important to take your specific requirements into account when choosing the right dementia alarm for your situation. Some of our dementia alarms should be charged overnight, so if your loved one tends to get up during the night, it might be best to choose another option.
We also offer GPS alarms used by those with dementia or Alzheimer’s that can go several days between charges, so this may be more suitable in these kinds of circumstances, as the devices need to be taken off in order to be charged.
If you need some help deciding on the most suitable system for you, our customer service team can help. Ring freephone 0800 085 7371 to speak to our specialist staff.
Can I be alerted when the person with dementia leaves the home?
All of our GPS dementia alarms can be set up to raise an alert when the wearer leaves a certain area or ‘safe zone’. This means that if your loved one is likely to leave the home on their own, you’ll be notified when they do so, and are able to keep track of where they are to help ensure they’re safe.
This helps your loved one to retain their independence but also has a safety net in case they do become confused or lost.
