Elderly care experts answer biggest questions about healthy lifestyles in later life

Learn about important factors for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Discover information about maintaining healthy eating habits and practising a healthy routine to enhance overall wellness and vitality, leading to a better quality of life.

What exercise should the elderly do?

For older adults, it is advisable to include different types of exercises in their daily routine, such as aerobic activities, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Walking, swimming, practising yoga, and using light weights are especially beneficial. People aged 65 and above should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, spread out over 5 days (30 minutes a day). Alternatively, they can opt for 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, like hiking, jogging, or running. Before taking up any exercises, do consult your GP.

Why is healthy eating important for the elderly?

Not paying attention to nutrition can worsen chronic illnesses and make life more challenging for the elderly. Research indicates that consuming a balanced diet can reduce the likelihood of anaemia, stroke, bone loss, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Additionally, proper nutrition and hydration can positively impact mental health in older adults.

How does age affect a person's health and fitness?

As we grow older, our body experiences a natural decline in muscle mass, bone density, and cardiovascular function. This can result in reduced mobility, balance problems, and an elevated risk of chronic diseases. Nonetheless, having a healthy lifestyle and engaging in regular physical activity can significantly lessen these effects and enhance older adults' overall health and fitness.

What foods should you avoid in your 70s?

As you enter your 70s, it's essential to maintain good health by limiting your intake of processed foods, sugary snacks, high-sodium foods, and excessive alcohol consumption.
